Welcome to the WonderLang Chronicles: The Genesis of a Language Adventure

Nov 07, 2023

Bonjour, fellow language adventurers and RPG enthusiasts!

I'm Jonathan, the creator of WonderLang, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to our very first blog post. As a French national with a globe-trotting spirit, I've called many places home—from the romantic streets of France to the innovative hubs of Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Korea. My journey has been as much about discovering cultures as it has been about embracing languages, and it's this passion that gave birth to WonderLang.

My love affair with RPGs began in childhood, with classics like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, Dragon Quest, Okami, and Zelda. These weren't just games to me; they were immersive experiences that unknowingly nurtured my English language skills. The rich storytelling and the myriad of characters and items in these games provided an unintentional, yet effective, language classroom.

The seed for WonderLang was planted in 2016 while I was living in Korea, attempting to navigate the beautiful complexities of the Korean language. I found myself juggling language learning apps like Duolingo, flashcard drills, and the escapades of Final Fantasy XVI—all while soaking in the local culture. It dawned on me that these elements could be harmoniously blended to create a learning platform that was both efficient and captivating. The idea was simple: an RPG that teaches you a language as you play.

I initially dabbled with RPG Maker to bring this vision to life, but the demands of life and a pursuit of an MBA from INSEAD meant that WonderLang had to take a backseat. However, the dream never faded. After gaining valuable experience in the tech industry and finding myself with the luxury of time, I've decided to take a sabbatical and reignite the development of WonderLang.

Today, I'm proud to share that we have a working demo! It's a two-hour slice of the WonderLang experience, designed for English speakers to learn French. But this is just the beginning. To fully realize the potential of WonderLang, I'm exploring crowdfunding options. The goal is to create a fully-fledged game that offers an array of target languages, making language learning accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

WonderLang is more than just a game; it's a bridge between worlds. It's for the dreamers who see language not as a barrier but as a gateway to new adventures. It's for the gamers who yearn for more than just entertainment from their hours spent in fantastical realms. And it's for the lifelong learners who believe that education can be as thrilling as any epic quest.
